“To your good health.” It’s a holiday toast we’ve all heard a hundred times in movies and television shows. But did it ever occur to you that you actually have the power to give the blessing of better health during this holiday season?

This Christmas – for as little as $60 – you can give the blessing of better health by making a generous year-end gift to the work of Lahai Health. 

I can’t imagine any other gift that can make such a lasting impact for such a modest investment.

Here in our Puget Sound community, tens of thousands of hard-working low-income adults have no access whatsoever to the kind of affordable health care most of us enjoy. Most of us can see our doctor, go to a specialist, receive diagnostic care, and fill our needed prescriptions without a second thought.

But there are many for whom that access to health care is an impossible dream. For example:

One of Lahai’s patients worked in an auto body shop to support his family. But chronic joint pain and pre-diabetes due to poor diet put him at severe risk of losing his job, and his livelihood.

Another man worked as a waiter. His ability to support his family was jeopardized by debilitating knee pain. At times it was so bad he could not work – leaving his family with zero income.

A woman patient of Lahai cleaned houses for a living in order to support herself and her two teenage children. But without access to proper health care, her deteriorating health and lack of energy were making it more and more difficult for her to work.

For each of these patients, and over 2,000 more in the past two years, the personalized primary care they received at no charge from staff and volunteers at Lahai Health clinics made the difference. The auto body shop worker saw a dramatic turnaround as Lahai dealt with his health conditions and taught him better eating habits. The waiter was diagnosed and referred for life-changing treatment, and is back at work. The hard-working mom got her energy back and regained her ability to provide for her kids and lead a rich and active life.

When you give the blessing of better health this Christmas, your act of generosity and compassion is much more than a charitable gesture. Instead, it represents a lasting investment in the life of another person – an investment that will pay on-going dividends in the form of stronger families and healthier communities.

The need is great, but the solution is relatively simple.

This year, the staff and volunteers at Lahai’s six weekly primary care clinics will perform some 2,000 patient appointments. (This is in addition to the dental and mental health counseling care we also provide.) After accounting for the revenue we receive from on-going community grants, the amount we need to raise for each appointment is $60.

Think of it: $60 for a comprehensive primary care medical appointment! Each appointment has the power to transform the life of a low-income uninsured adult. It’s one of the best bargains in health care.

So, as you plan to make holiday gifts this season, can I ask you: Will you give the blessing of better health by making a generous gift to Lahai? Consider the impact:

• Your gift of $300 covers the cost of 5 patient appointments;
• Your gift of $600 will pay the cost of 10 appointments with patients in need;
• Your gift of $1,200 will allow Lahai to conduct 20 life-changing appointments!

Of course, a gift of any size is most welcome, and all gifts to Lahai are tax deductible as allowed by IRS regulations.

Whatever you elect to do, and however much you decide to give, I promise we will use each gift to continue providing the best possible primary medical care for the patients who count on us.
