Medical Volunteer

To serve patients in need throughout King and Snohomish Counties, we depend on a diverse group of volunteers for each weekly clinic (mobile or fixed site). Below, you can find descriptions of the unique roles where volunteers can serve.

Volunteers typically sign up to serve 1-2 times monthly for a 5-hour shift during a clinic’s operating hours. We offer self-scheduling so you can choose the opening and location you would prefer. We ask for a one-year commitment from volunteers and provide training specific to the position, including: Patient Confidentiality (HIPAA), Blood-borne Pathogens, and Electronic Health Record (EHR) software.

If you are interested in volunteering with Lahai Health, please fill out an online application form.

Patient Care Coordinators (Receptionists)

Patient Care Coordinators facilitate a positive experience for everyone. Volunteers in this position should be organized, detail oriented, friendly, patient, work well with others, have excellent phone skills, and possess basic computer skills. Receptionists greet patients, ensure patient paperwork is completed correctly, enter new patient information into our EHR program, and schedule follow-up appointments. All training is provided; no experience is needed.

Translators

We serve many patients that have specific language needs. Translators help at clinics with paperwork and follow-up appointments.

Patient Schedulers

Patient Schedulers ensure our patients secure an appointment. They answer incoming phones calls, review patient messages, return calls, screen patients for eligibility, and schedule patient appointments. This work is supported by Lahai Health medical staff at our Haller Lake office. Volunteers are asked to make a weekly 4-hour commitment between the hours of 8-4pm Monday – Friday. All training is provided; no experience is necessary.

Patient Advocate

Patient Advocate volunteers serve during clinic hours and address our patients’ holistic needs. Primary responsibilities include listening to patient concerns and connecting patients with additional resources within their community (i.e. food banks, shelter, utility bill assistance programs, etc.). Patient Advocates also assist patients with applications for government-subsidized health insurance plans (e.g. Apple Health, Medicaid) or private charity care programs. Various resources for searching and accessing community resources are provided.

Site Coordinators

Site Coordinators for Lahai Health set-up the front-end patient area before the clinic starts, work with the Nurse Case Manager staff to lead the team meeting and assist in facilitating the clinic flow. They collaborate with the Staff Nurse Case Manager, Volunteer Coordinator, and Medical Office Manager to ensure an efficiently run clinic. They serve in reception by greeting patients, collecting donations, ensuring patient paperwork is completed correctly, entering new patient information into our EHR program, contacting translators as needed, training new receptionist and scheduling follow-up appointments. Site Coordinators are leaders of specific clinic sites and volunteer every week, or every other week, at the same location and time.

Mobile Medical Clinic Maintenance

Volunteers who help with Mobile Medical Clinic truck maintenance must have comprehensive knowledge of maintaining vehicles and the skills necessary to address any issues that arise. Our mobile medical clinic is periodically inspected for cleanliness and mechanical operation. They can assist with driving the vehicle to and from the shop for maintenance and repair if they have the current Washington state CDL, class ‘A’ or ‘B’, and have a great driving record.

Hospitality

A Hospitality Lead will work with a team of individuals to ensure that meals or sack lunches are provided to volunteers serving at our clinics. Each clinic will have 10-12 volunteers who need a meal. A Hospitality Lead will coordinate with the hospitality team so that each individual or small group on the team only has to provide a meal once a month. A few gluten-free or vegan choices for each clinic are greatly appreciated.

Prayer Advocate

Prayer advocates come to clinics to pray with patients who request prayer. They also can pray for more general requests if there are no patients requesting prayer. This role can be a specific Lahai Health volunteer, or a person who is onsite for other reasons but willing to pray with patients (i.e. church staff, church volunteers, etc.).

Retinal Screening

A Retinal Screening Technician is responsible for capturing images of the eyes of retinal screening patients. Training is provided.

Lab Tech & Assistant

The role of Laboratory Technician and Assistant will be to ensure that the clinic’s specimen processing runs smoothly and complies with lab protocols, while maintaining an organized work environment.

Medical Office

Medical office volunteers assist the Office Manager/Coordinator with various tasks including data entry and reviewing data, medical records requests, PIN notes, restocking of the mobile medical clinic, reviewing charts for upcoming labs and diagnoses, lab tracking, updating waitlists, shredding, inventory.
